The Problem This Guide Helps You Solve
VWAP is a volume-weighted average price for its configured calculation period. VWAP Deviation places price relative to that reference and its surrounding bands. The practical question is not simply whether price is far from the average, but how it behaves once it gets there.
How to use this in your workflow
Work through these checks in order. The examples explain a process; they are not instructions to place a trade.
Understand the reference
Check the chart and the indicator settings so you know what period the VWAP represents. A changing reference changes the interpretation of distance. Compare readings within the same intended session context.
Distinguish rejection from acceptance
Observe whether price returns inside a band after probing beyond it or continues trading outside it. Returning toward the average and holding an extended area are different behaviors; neither can be inferred from distance alone.
Combine extension with a planned location
Compare the bands with a nearby session level or reaction zone. Decide what would support the idea and what would invalidate it before sizing a position. A target near VWAP is a scenario to evaluate, not a destination the market owes you.
Examples and limits
A hypothetical chart-reading example
Price moves beyond an outer band and then returns inside near a session high. That sequence may support further study of a return toward value. If price holds outside the band instead, using the same mean-reversion explanation ignores the new evidence.
What this tool cannot tell you
Price need not return to VWAP during your trade or session. Band touches are not automatic entries, and the displayed distance does not tell you what position size is suitable for your account.
Common Execution Mistakes To Avoid
-
Treating a historical example as a promised future outcome.
